Target Audience

 My film is targeted at a teenage audience, although this is quite broad as I feel that older viewers can watch it to evoke a sense of nostalgia for the past. I would also say that it can be enjoyed by all genders and backgrounds. I was inspired by films such as Superbad and Booksmart, as they have comedic relatable characters which explore the themes of adolescence. However, I want to explore the early years of adolescence in my film, doing so lightheartedly and encouraging the audience to find humour in the failures of these characters who are just trying to fit in. I think a mature audience up to about the age of 30 will also enjoy the film, as again they laugh at the character's misfortune as they reflect on their own adolescence. The film is set in the modern-day, which we can see in the mise-en-scene and cultural references made throughout the film. However, I think that the situations these characters face are ones that can be relatable to people who have grown up in the 90s-now. The film is inappropriate for audiences under the age of 15, however, due to the intake of alcohol shown and the mild swearing.

I will have one title at the beginning of the film which will be in a comic book-style font to establish a sense of youthful, light energy that runs through the film and its characters. I want to have a pink title overlaying a bold blue background . The ending credits will be in the same font, behind will be a black screen. The credits will roll after a sudden cut to black at the end, so hopefully, adding the credits onto a black screen will keep the sense of tension in the air due to the open ending.

Over (2015): Short Film Research

Sound design is a particularly important micro-element used in this short film which I would use in my own film. There is no use of music, which therefore highlights the importance and dramatic effect of sound to create verisimilitude when retelling this story based on true events. An effective moment that shows this is the beginning sequence. Due to the minimalistic slow panning establishing shot with dark, obscuring nightlight, we are drawn to engage our senses more to discover what is going on focusing in on what we can see and hear. Therefore, the sound of the street at night with the natural breeze is enhanced, making it all the more shocking when this is disrupted by this falling body. Temporal markers are used in this film to aid the narrative. They are simple, white titles at the bottom left of the screen. Over (2015)

  Lighting: - The lighting switches from naturalistic to very theatrical/ dramatic- the lighting also coincides with the character's thoughts- the lighting is expressionistic/theatrical- when the cafe turns into a train- a metaphor for the journey the character is about to embark on. Open ending: - Again, another open ending- rather subtle + not subtle at the same time- the entire film looks stylish Action: - The action prompts the thoughts of the characters- e.g. a couple walking past her, provoked her to think about sticking with her boyfriend- other examples- clock on the wall, the sound of a baby crying off-screen Metaphors in the film: - The door of the cafe constantly opening/closing- a metaphor for opportunity.  What I liked/ what could I take for my film? - Have all character background information planned/ pegged even if we don't see it in the film- for example, in this film, the use of the absent boyfriend/ex-boyfriend.
